Supporting Sussex golfers in their efforts to hitting the big time
On the 14th March 2017, Sussex Golf was invited by Golfing4life to follow two of their brightest up and coming patrons Sophie Lamb and Marco Penge. The scene was set at Sunningdale Golf club for the 83rd Foursomes tournament, where Sophie and Marco were defending their crown from an epic win in 2016, with family members on their bags.
The Old course
The Old course welcomed the 2016 winners at 08:30am with Marco teeing up a Titleist pro v1 designed by his playing partner and long-term girlfriend Sophie. Immaculately manicured fairways and greens were the only things to stand between them and their first win of the day.
The pair soon took a lead over their opponents Richard O’Hanlon and Jon Beavan, club pro’s from St Kew and Sherborne respectively, settling into what appeared to be a well-planned strategy with Marco taking the odd numbered holes and Sophie the even’s. This approach suited both of their games, helping them to a 4&3 win in the first round.
The New course
After a spot of lunch and just over a 2-hour break, the pair headed out to warm up with some short game and putting drills before a 13:30 tee time on the New course (a course preferred by Marco) with slightly narrower fairways and smaller greens.
The New course was played by the lower half of the draw in the morning. There were subtle signs of traffic on the greens which perhaps didn’t help putting. It was a battle but last year’s winners managed the pull the game back to A/S going into the 16th.
However, with a birdie on 16 and a win on 17, Lamb and Penge lost 2&1 to last years Semifinalists and this year’s Winners Graham Powell and Henry Smart from Banstead Downs Golf club.
