Name: Rohan Miah
Handicap: 2.6 (as at 01/10/2017)
We were fortunate to catch up with Rohan in September amidst a busy schedule of studies, practice and tournaments. The current (as at 01/10/2017) top-ranked player in Sussex County Order of Merit 2017 under 18’s category is having arguably one of his best seasons yet and long may it continue, this is definitely one to watch for the future.
Here’s some insight into his achievements, what’s in his bag and what he can’t be without on the course.
1) What’s your earliest memory of golf?
My earliest memory of golf is playing in the junior camps/roll-ups with Dave Dickenson at Horsham.
2) How did you get into golf?
I got into golf when my dad took me to the driving range at the ripe old age of 5. I had a natural ability to make good contact with the ball in every swing & wanted to improve every time. I loved going to the driving range, working on my swing and getting the ball as straight as possible.
3) What is your greatest golfing achievement to date?
There are a few that come to mind, winning 2016 under 13 European championships in Spain, 2017 under 14’s Wentworth junior open shooting level par and retaining the club championship title at Horsham this year for the second year running. Closely followed by winning the 2017 East Brighton junior open shooting -4 & being selected for the England U16’s squad.
4) What’s in the bag?
Driver- Callaway great big Bertha
3 wood – Taylormade M1 2016
Hybrid – Ping G30
Irons – Callaway Apex 2017
Wedges – Titleist SM6 54/56/58degrees
Putter – Odyssey Versa
5) What is the one item in your bag (excluding clubs & balls) that you can’t be without on the course?
The one item I couldn’t be without is a Bushnell (range scope) as it tells me the yardage to exact measurements.
6) You have been lucky enough to play some great courses, what was is your favourite so far? my favourite course so far is….Wentworth West course.
My favourite course so far is….Wentworth West course.
7) What are your goals for the next 18 months?
My goals are to keep improving, work hard, play as much as I can, get my handicap down to 0, win the under 18’s European open in Spain in November which I’ve qualified to compete in again & to progress in my game with the England squad.
8) What is your one tip for any amateur golfer just starting out?
My tip would be to persevere, as hard work really does pay off. To be thick skinned as golf can really get to you both mentally and physically but stay focused, driven and enjoy all the hard work.
9) If there was one golfer you aspire to (past or present), who would it be?
I would aspire to be like the great Tiger Woods as I really respect how he has changed the game for the modern era and just how naturally skilled he is. Always a pleasure to watch such a pure swing.
10) What are your career goals?
To play on the PGA tour
Everyone at Sussex Golf would like to thank Rohan for taking time out to chat with us and wish him all the success with his golf, particularly with the England U16 squad and defending your title in the European Championships Spain (albeit in a new age category), we look forward to seeing him on the fairways in Horsham again soon.
